These are the herbalism books that I have and use.
Healing with the Herbs of Life, Lesley Tierra
This book is a kind of fusion of Western herbal remedies and Chinese ones. There is a section on different ways you can administer these remedies (i.e., tea, decoction, bath, etc. and more) The information is very useful if you are interested in going further (i.e., I would not recommend this book for beginners)
The older edition,The Herbs of Life , which is the one I have, is here.
The Herb Book, Benedict Lust
This is the first herbal book I ever owned (I got it back in the 1970s). It has so much information, if you are interested in herbal remedies for anything, and it details how to make different kinds of remedies, so that you can feel sure about what you are doing. (amazon listings are sky-high – if you are interested, I would check out abebooks.com, which has some reasonably priced editions)
Mastering Herbalism, Paul Huson
Covers just about everything you could want to do – medicinal herbs, cooking with herbs, herbal perfumes and incenses, herbs for beauty, aphrodisiacs, elixirs, (and, uh, well, okay – things for witchcraft – you don’t have to look in that section if you don’t want to) – I do look to this book when I want to find something I am looking for.
Natural Healing with Herbs, Humbart Santillo
This is like a medical manual – it discusses herbs you can use, then it lists herbs by issue, then it lists herbal compound remedies by issue. It discusses how to make the different things (teas, tonics, infusions, tinctures, powders, poultices, etc) This is another book which is apparently out of print (I saw some listings on abebooks.com)
OTHER HERBALISM BOOKS I HAVE AND GO TO
The Herbal Medicine-Maker’s Handbook: A Home Manual, James Green
This has a lot of good information.
Rosemary Gladstar’s Herbal Recipes for Vibrant Health: 175 Teas, Tonics, Oils, Salves, Tinctures, and Other Natural Remedies for the Entire Family, Rosemary Gladstar
Over the years, I have collected many useful recipes from Gladstar, most recently from her youtube videos. This book is a very welcome addition.
Healthy Healing: A Guide to Self Healing for Everyone (Eleventh Edition) Linda Page
Page has been publishing her Healthy Healing books for years. This book is easy to follow – everything is listed by malady and contains detailed dietary, herbal, and other protocols to follow (note: many of the protocols involve her own branded herbal remedies) . I have used this book to great effect often.
